When Xavier and Julie discovered this spectacular site atop a hill in the western Serengeti, with breathtaking views and set well away from other lodges, they realized they could create something truly exceptional there.

“At first, we weren’t quite sure what style to give this lodge, other than a strong, instinctive desire for a lodge standing like a fortress, overlooking this vast plain…”

The lodge was therefore designed like a stone fortress, with monumental carved doors, incorporating tented structures in order to preserve the spirit of traditional safaris so dear to our hearts…

For Xavier Marie and Julie Brisson, the owners of Laba Laba, safaris are an opportunity to connect with nature. Especially here, in Grumeti—a place famous for the Great Migration and an ideal year-round destination thanks to its abundance of wildlife and vegetation. When Xavier and Julie discovered this spectacular site perched on a hill in the western Serengeti, with breathtaking views and away from other lodges, they realized they could create something truly exceptional there.

Around the same time, they came across the large-scale sculptures of South African artist Zizipho Poswa. Enthusiastic and inspired by her anthropomorphic totems, they began developing the idea of creating a private collection of African art that would become the main source of inspiration for a new Laba Laba lodge.

“The more we searched, the more fascinating artists we found—many from South Africa, but also from Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ethiopia,” explains Julie.

“We eventually selected ten artists and acquired forty-two works, which will be displayed as a guiding thread throughout the main living spaces and the twelve tented suites. This artistic journey will reveal the full soul and strength of African nature.”

“At first, we had the idea of individual villas with pools, but we soon realized we didn’t want concrete in the bush—we wanted a genuine safari experience, preferably under canvas,” Xavier explains.
